Sandusky area becomes hub of splash resorts
Well known as a summer hot spot and lure for roller-coaster enthusiasts, this city and its environs are quickly becoming the state’s epicenter for splashing around at water-soaked playgrounds.
In just six years, the city has undergone a frenzy of indoor water resort development that has helped transform the Lake Erie community from a summer getaway to a year-round destination.
Developers have sunk millions into hotel-based aquatic recreation sites to entice the nearly seven million visitors a year that tourism officials say visit Sandusky, halfway between Toledo and Cleveland.
A new small park opened this month, one resort is expanding, and a third is under construction.
