Hitting the books is harder in AugustCommentary: In the olden days, schoolchildren not only trudged 10 miles through drifting snow in the winter to classes (exaggeration), they also started classes when the nip of fall was in the air (no exaggeration). That would be sometime around mid-September, although, with climate change, it's easy to get confused. It might have been just the day after Labor Day. Now, we not only close schools in the winter because of cold temperatures but we also cancel classes at the beginning of the school year because of rogue heat waves.
